Debit card payments taken as a job lot

You've done it now Ollipro!small shops tend to do this because they are charged on a per-batch basis for card authorisations... therefore, if they're not desperate for cash and want to save themselves some processing fees, they'll do something like what you've experienced.
There is nowt you or anyone can do about it, and in all honesty, it's your own responsibility to ensure that you don't spend money that's only available due to a fall-off. consider maintaining an account for card transactions and a separate one for everything else.
People will be trying to use these retailers to get a ''free overdraft'' by hoping that transactions will take a long time to go through.
It will be all your fault you know

Indeed, although I don't think it would hurt if the system used for debit transactions was altered somewhat; the way it currently works was designed for credit cards and simply carried across; allowing debit card customers to see pending authorisations on their account and allowing them to maintain a block on the funds beyond the statutory period would go a long way in my opinion.0
