New netbook won't play DVDs

Thank you all for your comments/suggestions. Spent hour & half in the shop yesterday afternoon where the assistant tried 3 different DVD drives in our netbook and then tried with another netbook on display but nothing would play a dvd. I even mentioned the comments I'd had on here (that Win7 starter won't support it) and she said that can't be right as the external drives are designed to be used with netbooks. We're quite convinced that's the issue but it's now a point of principle that they have sold us this bundle and it won't do what we want. They are going to get their techie people to ring us later this week so we'll see what they suggest. We will prob look at the alternatives that you good people have suggested but not until we've spoken to the techies from the shop. I'll keep you informed.

Not yet. Don't want to start downloading stuff yet incase we end up returning everything and starting again. As a matter of interest, what model of netbook and external disc drive are you using?
