If I was in your position, I would keep my old car going, its great to have a brand new car sitting on the drive, with insurance tax, and services all paid for, but what a lot of people forget is that during the three years that you have the car, you pay out 7 thousand pounds, for a car you are only leasing, and at the end of the three years, you are given an option to buy, but the price you have to pay is the price that the car is worth at the time. So the 7 thousand odd that you have already paid, is lost.

Also once you have had insurance from the motobility, you no longer have a no claims bonus, to insure a car that is not motobility. Even if you have had no accidents during the three years.

You can take up the offer of a motobility car at any time, as long as you have 12 months left of your motobility award. I would honestly save the money that you get from the HRM and buy your own car. Or even buy a new car and pay the HP with HRM money.

PS you can have a motobility car for as long as you are deemed fit to drive, there is no age restrictions on it.
  • petrolhead the reason I didn't think I'd qualify is because I do have a problem and was honest when filling in the form. Surprisingly therefore, honesty does pay, if you'll excue the pun, sometimes. On the other hand I do know of one or two people who are reasonably good thespians and have all the financial help they don't need.

I spend the afternoon with a family friend who works in a relevant gov dept, and who clarified PiP etc in idiots terms so I understand what it's about now. I can see that some will need to be very cautious in the future.

tomitma my sums came to very similar figures to yours. I'll hang on to my car as I wouldn't be better off having one via the motability scheme, and I've already saved quite a bit toward buying one in a couple of years anyway. The HRM will be put towards it, that way it also earns a little interest.

My first thought when I was informed of the award was 'thank goodness, now things will be a little easier' but I still made one teabag make two cups of tea, and used the washing up water to wash the kitchen floor...
    Old habits die hard :)

Back in the late 90's we got a new Motability car. (Renault Megane) at the end of the three year period I considered it a total waste of money considering the limited mileage we did..
What we did was get a decent secondhand car and use our Mobility money to pay for that.
In fact decent used cars are now so cheap I seriously doubt its worth getting a new car on Motability. We saved our Mobility money and have just bought a used Renault Clio for £1250. We have RAC relay which covers breakdowns.

Then again... I also have a Cobra that I painstakingly (and painfully) built myself !.

I agree with you about buying a second hand car. I acquired a Vauxhall Astra 1997 in Feb 2008, previously owned by my late uncle. Found it in the garage, he hadn't used it for a couple of years. Had it MOT'd, a new tyre, new battery and it has been absolutely brilliant.
I bought a new 57 plate BMW 330D Coupe which is in the garage which has not been used since I have had the Astra apart from a few weeks in the summer. With all of the snow and ice we have had, it has never let me down. Can't say that for the Beamer - slightest bit of ice and it's all over the place!
