Thanks again.
Only two things will physically stop a PC from working....
Broken PSU and Broken USB socket....
Either way you wont be able to tell unless you have intimate knowledge of computers. So take it to a local computer repair shop as Rufus suggested... And not PC world unless you wanna pay £240 before they look at it...To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0 -
Frankly I'd consider it time to move on to a new machine if that one was showing so many failures - as mentioned above you can open your dead one (unplugged) and remove the hard drive, and again as mentioned look at the connections on it, which will tell you if it is IDE or SATA - or better still take a photo of it and go into Maplins and ask them to guide you to a cheap enclosure/caddy that will work for that drive. About £20-40, probably cheaper online, but I do like to support the high street shops and you have someone to take it back to if there is a problem. Easy to fit the drive into, then you have a USB connection which will (if the physical drive isn't dead) let you access your old files on the new PC (or laptop or whatever).
No activity at all does sound like the PSU, but you have to query what made it die in the first place, and in an aging machine, it may be an excuse to upgrade. That said, a PSU failure is likely to smell of PSU failure, so do check the plug and any other fuses first

The PSU is this model:
FSP FSP300-60PN(PF) (300W) made by the FSP Group. Ive had a quick google, but can't see anywhere to buy a direct replacement. Does any one know what I would need to get to replace it, and where is a good place to look for it?“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt.” Charles M Schulz0 -

Any standard ATX PSU will fit...
300 watt or above will do.....
I wouldn't spend more than £15 for one, look on Ebay...
They are easy to fit, if you know how to use lego, you should be able to work it out. If not, I can fit you one for £35 if you live in my local vicinity.......To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0 -
Have you checked the fuse in the wall plug?Move along, nothing to see.0

Thanks ever so much for all the advice, I really appreciate it. I feel quite positive about retreiving some of my files. I'm pretty sure there is nothing vital on it, but I know my kids will be disappointed if they can't get some of their old bits and pieces.
Now here is another question that I think you guys are going to have an opinion on!
What make for my replacement??!! I think I would like a well known brand, so Dell, HP, Acer.....And where is a good place to purchase.
I'm thinking of plumping for this, as I trust John Lewis:

I dont do anything other than the usual on my PC...“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt.” Charles M Schulz0 -

I have a switched 6 socket extension lead, and other things such as printer are powering up fine. i have plugged processsor into one of the spare plugs, but it still didn't work. The power supply to the processor has been hit and miss on and off for a few weeks now. A few times when it wouldn't turn on, I unplugged it from the mains, then plugged it back in and it worked again. So I do think it is a problem with the PSU component.“All you need is love. Desktop PC's... Mmmm lemme think...
Anything will do really, because they can all be upgraded to some extent.
...
Computers these days are way more powerful they what is needed....
Look for a bare bones system from Ebuyer for around £230, if your old pc has a OEM sticker use the serial on your new PC. if not you can get an "cheap" GENUINE up to date OS, if you know where to look.... ;-)
If you are looking for a laptop, the only two I can really recommend, are Dell and Toshiba....To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0
