bank charges

Options
Hi,
I am new to this and a not very computer literate mum who is trying to help her son reclaim bank charges. I have all of his statements but I do not know the difference between o/draft interest,o/draft excess, and o/draft usage fee. Which,if any, can he claim for? Can you also try claiming for unpaid direct debits? Many thaqnks to you all.

you cannot claim for interest incurred on your overdraft, or fees for a service to which your son subscribed eg, if he has an account that you have to pay for. thing such as 'paid referal fees' 'unauthorised overdraft fees' can be claimed back and you can make a reasoned estimate of the interest tht they charged you on these fees. Which bank is it, and what does it say on the statement? If you want more specific advice, feel free to pm me and I'd be happy to help you out as much as I can.

the CAG website is very useful and where I got all my resources and information from but I am happy to help if you want.

  • Ebay DD which i never authorised put me £10 over my £500 limit - then the £28 and £38 pound charges were going on at a rate of about £50 a day.

Now at £899 the charges seem to have stopped - and i will contest these with the bank - even if the best they can say is " it's in the terms and conditions"

  • Don't bother "contesting" with the bank, just start the reclaim procedure with your bank's head office. Check Martin's article then follow the links to the CAG forum and PenaltyCharges :)

Now this gets me. If I'd been charged £28 or whatever because I spent too much and a dd took me over an overdraft limit then I'd just live with it. If someone takes a DD in error and you get charged as a result of this where do you stand?
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

It doesn't cost the bank £30 to bounce a DD, cheque or take you over your overdraft limit, the process is entirely automatic and as such the cost to the bank is exactly the same as if it had gone through fine, within your limit. The charges are a purely profit making scheme and the terms of the contract that the banks like to keep refering to are as such unfair, and therefore not enforcable.

The banks aren't our friends, their not our enemies, they don't have any feeling towards or about us, they just want to make money from us.
