Our old Myson Midas combi has finally bit the dust I think, refuses to light pilot light and making hideous clicking noises.
Cant get anyone out to look at it till New year,so have decided to bite the bullet and get a new combi fitted,British Gas seem to have a deal on at moment,so got them coming on Wedenesday, think we'll be a bit pongy by then, question is,anyone got any good recommendations for makes/prices etc
House is a 2 bed terraced cottage, one bedroom, most of the time just the wife and I,with about 9 radiators,

BG will typically be 30-50% more expensive than a local recommended GSR RGI, and you'l be stuck with BG's limited model options.
Get at least a couple of quotes from local RGI's for decent brands such as Worcester-Bosch, Vaillant etc.

Agree , local company fitted a Vaillant for half the price of BG and miles earlier appointmant than BG could offer

Don't go with BG. Locals will probably be able to do it at at least 2/3rd price and often January is the quieter month of the winter period, so less wait.

A good local RGI will probably be a lot quicker than BG, as long as he's not snowed under (no pun intended) with cold weather-related emergency jobs.
The fact that BG can look at it on Wednesday to quote a price doesn't necessarily mean that they'll be able to start it any time soon.

  • My neighbour is a British Gas installation engineer and he mentioned last week that if you accept the installation quote before 1pm then they will start the installation the following day.

They may be more expensive but at this time of year you'd be hard pushed to get service like that what with local companies taking 2 weeks off over festive period and perhaps being too busy with breakdowns.

I'm certainly not a British Gas fan due to their over inflated prices but I thought this was an exceptional level of service at this time of year.
