My daughter has tried to change electricity suppliers but every time she applies, they say her meter is listed as being in a commercial property. She tells them it isn't, it's in a normal two up, two down, terraced house but they don't want to know. How can she can get this listing corrected?

She has to get the Business side of her supplier to send a form for her to fill out to change the MPAN to a Domestic Supply.

What is a 3 phase supply? The property would have been let to students previously but I can't see it actually being flats as it's very small.

Thanks Joyful. I'll give her that information.
  • A three phase supply is irrelevant, I have it in my house and it's never been a commercial property.

I'm no expert when it comes to the billing side of things but have seen a few problems in my travels that have needed sorting out. It can be a pain to change from business to residential, I recently visited a property where they thought they had changed, but on checking their bill they were still with the business side...all that had been done was that they were paying the 5% VAT. Not a problem you might think, but business contracts can be re-drafted come expiry time and the tariff can be significantly increased...in this case they went from paying 9p per unit to 17p!

BGB are one of the biggest culprits for doing this, so first things first, check when the contract expires and make sure to change to a residential or negotiate a decent price around the time it is due. If you can get it changed to a residential earlier then so much the better, but be warned, business accounts do not have the same kind of consumer protection as residential.

Joyfull is a BG person so may be able to explain more, though from my understanding of how BG is structured the Business and Residential people are seperate entities. Expect the buck to be passed around...it normally is on the rare occasion I have to talk to them.

I have in the past dealt with this same situation from Customers. It is very easy to get the Business side to send the form. I can't remember it's name but it asks for proof that it is not commercial. Once they sort it out they close the account at their end and pass back to be billed as a residential account. During this time they will get MPAS updated also so if the customer wants to change supplier they will be able to with the correct info on the Industry systems.
