Motobility car- Problems- Dealer rufuses to deal with.

My parents have a motobility car, provided by Toyota.

There has been a problem with the car for a few months. it regularly fails to start and even cuts out when driving. I thought at first it was maybe the way my dad was driving as the car is only a 1.1 and he's more used to driving large 2.0L+ cars and works vans before he retired. But it cut out on me when I took my mum to the hospital last week and then failed to start after she'd had her appointment.

I know it's not the battery or alternatoras I've checked it with a multi meter, and the alternator is charging the battery.

It's been back to Toyota twice (who also refused to pick it up despite it being a motobility car) and they refuse to acknowledge that there is a fault.

The car now will not start at all, it may be a problem with the starter motor, but i have no idea where it is on the car, and I don't really want to go messing with it. Checking the voltage on a battery is one thing, messing with other parts is something different.

Toyota won't be available till Wednesday and until then I'll have toi run mum around in my car.

If Toyota refuse to acknowledge something is wrong, what do we do.

Could we try and get out of the contract (only 6 months into a 3 yr contract) and get a different car?

Any advice appreciated.

my auntie had a 206 ages ago and it was cutting out randomly and she told them she feared for her safety if the car did it on a busy road for example, she told motability she didnt want to drive the car anymore and they accepted it back.

but if toyota wont/cant do anything about it cutting out, involve motability

    Quite!

This is not your car it belongs to Motability - let them sort it out -

stop fretting and have a good one.

Seconded. They are the owners and not you. In effect Motability are a leasing company and you lease the car from them. Contact them in the first instance.
  • I would second the advice of the 2 previous posters.

My husband has a Mobilty car that refused to change gear (auto) and then refused to start at all.

The garage didnt want to know but Mobility arranged for the RAC to collect the car and for another car to be delivered the same day.

We have always found them very helpful

  • yes i agree get motabilty involved, tell them the vehicle is a safety hazard and dangerous as it has cut out and wont start, your having difficulty with toyota customer services in getting response and perminant fix, get VAT petrol reciepts for running your mum and dad around in your vehicle when the car is collected go in with and hand the recipts to the manager and ask for your expenses to be paid as the car wasnt fixed on 2 previous occasions and now they wont do nothing about it untill motability got involved.

Not clear what you mean by this! Do you mean they have tested it in their garage but could find nothing wrong?

The car now will not start at all, it may be a problem with the starter motor,

Yes! But on the other hand it may not.

I had a car that cut out intermittently: once when I was on the motorway. I was hauled to my local trusted garage by the RAC. When I returned to the garage the next day the mechanic told me he had checked it out and found nothing wrong. I jumped in the car and started off and it cut out within a few minutes.

The mechanic then realized there must be a real problem and gave it a more thorough examination. It turned out there was a loose wire in the ignition system which sometimes made a good connection and then suddenly disconnected. It took the mechanic a long time to diagnose it.

but i have no idea where it is on the car, and I don't really want to go messing with it. Checking the voltage on a battery is one thing, messing with other parts is something different.

I am all for a little DIY but this is one for the experts. If they find out you have been testing the parts they might even try to pin the blame on you.

If Toyota refuse to acknowledge something is wrong, what do we do.

Maybe when you took it to them before, they managed to get it started and running ok and concluded that there was no problem. They would have needed to take it on a test run to discover if the engine was cutting out.

Now that the car wont start at all it must be clear that there is definitely something wrong. (You did put some petrol in?) Sorry, just checking.

Could we try and get out of the contract (only 6 months into a 3 yr contract) and get a different car?

I dont know what the terms of your contract are but I feel sure you are entitled to a car that is fit for purpose and this one clearly aint.

Worst time of the year for this to happen. Hope you get it sorted ASAP.
