Anyone recommend a Washer/Dryer?

Options
I have no choice. I NEED a washer/dryer due to having a very small house and 2 young children. Last year was a complete nightmare with wet laundry all over the house  and I vowed never again!

So can anyone recommend a half decent model for me please?

  • I was in the same situation.

Live in a flat and there is not a lot of room for washing machine/ dryer. Used to have them both in a cupboard with the dryer on top but when the dryer went bang I decided to free up some space by getting a washer/dryer.

Many will not recommend it but having had the two combinations I would say it's not all that bad. The drying does take a little longer but i now have a lot more storage space so thats a good trade off imo.

I bought an LG direct drive washer dryer and it has helpful features like a delay timer so i can stick it on in the morning and it will finish the drying process when i walk in the door from work etc...

My advice is get one with as big a drying capactiy as you can otherwise you will have to remove half you wash before starting drying and that will get annoying!

can recommend the LG direct drive (no belt)

I also looked at an AEG and other one which i can't remember sorry.
  • I know that feeling I live in a small flat too, I would say not Indesit, I bought one of their washer dryer's and it lasted 7 days until it exploded on the first boil wash.

I then did a lot of research into a replacement and bought a Bosch Washer and the washing comes out of that virtually dry, hang it overnight on an airer and its bone dry in the morning thus solving the need for a Washer/Dryer and Bosch is worth the extra money.
BTW I would point you John Lewis Direct if you want to buy, good prices, if you register first you get a discount code off your first order and the service is second to none if anything goes wrong.
  • We have a Hotpoint Aquarius Extra 1200 spin washer dryer and it is excellent. My husband has very bad skin allergies and lots of washing machines on the market are designed to use such a small amount of water that they may not rinse out all the detergent, and can exascerbate skin problems. This allows you to have a 'super rinse' and it also has a 'quick wash' option, and a half wash option. And its not nearly as expensive as Miele or Bosch.

Please don't buy an indesit washer-dryer. My 60 degree wash stopped working after 3 months and when I tried to claim on the 12 month guarantee they wouldn't let me as I didn't have my receipt (I had the delivery note with date delivered but no receipt as my dad bought it online for us).
Dryer packed up on it about a year after we had it it so now if I'm doing 60 degree wash I have to do a number 1 wash at 60 degrees (supposed to use only 90 degrees for that wash) and the dryer doesn't work at all so I'm back to wet clothes and heating on all the time.
Another friend had similar problem with an indesit machine so I'd never buy one again now, and I'd certainly never get another washer dryer.

I'd also say if you have loads of washing to all the time, it's a bit of a false economy time wise as you can't wash whilst you're drying so all your laundry will take twice as long. There's only me and hubby so didn't matter for us but I'd imagine a family would struggle (and that's if it doesn't pack up!).

If you really can't get a separate tumble dryer, make sure you get an extended warranty or something. I know comet used to refund your 5 year warranty if you didn't claim on it but don't know if they still do - at least that way if you don't need it you get your money back albeit with no interest.

I had to get my LG washer dryer fixed the other day - turned out the door wasn't locking shut (so machine wouldn't start) because the door lock mechanism is actually held together by a pin which goes in 'upside down' so eventually, with repeated use, it will drop out - talk about a design fault! Nice repair man put some thread lock on it when he fixed it ;)
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Agreed. I had an Indesit WM and DW and both were rubbish.

Three times, in fact, because you usually can only dry half the load you wash.
  • Try the AEG Lavatherm Turbo L16830. Cheapest place to buy where they have stock is here

    I have a built-in hotpoint BWD 129

The washing aspect is excellent but I only used the drier three times. It takes only half the load in the washer and it takes forever to dry. The washing also gets very creased. I bought two good airers and now think in advance and dry all my washing on the airers. I would never buy a combination washer/dryer by choice

OP have you a decent airing cupboard that you could do some work on ie convert to a drying area?

i have had two aeg washer/tumble dryers in the last five years. the first one we left behind in the rental property was excellent. we bought another one (a bit cheaper due to lower spin speed spec) and that is great as well.

aeg offers best in terms of quality and value for money. if you have money to splash go for a miele top of the range one with low energy rating for washer and more importantly dryer.

buying a higher quality machine with a good energy consumption grade, will mean that you have a better machine in terms of reliability and running costs

I thought it was only my washer dryer that takes forever to dry... ;) now I know that I'm not alone - lol It took 3 hours to dry 8 pairs of socks today

I have a Servis one and it's quite old but it's still going! We didn't have space for a separate washer and dryer in the old house so that's why we ended up with this one - it was also the cheapest on the market at the time and the only one we could afford :o

I only use the dryer when we really must have something dried and we can't wait for something to dry on the airer. I keep considering buying a separate dryer now we've moved to a bigger house, but then I think of all the extra electricity bills and think that I'm better off buying another airer...
