Washing machine water emptying into sink...

Happy Xmas everyone!

As it's Christmas Day it's Murphy's Law something was bound to happen like this.

Had Miele machine for 3 years, looked after it etc, but I understand the waste pipe is joined to the sink waste pipe?

It has been working perfectly, but did a wash tonight and the water rose really high into the sink.

The water is now just above the plug hole.

This has got to be a blockage, but I was also wondering whether it might be to do with cold weather?

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Could be that the waste has a slow flow caused by build up of soap sludge and general debris, doubt if it's freezing, since the water discharged from the washing machine will be warm or hot. Have you tried a standard sink plunger to clear the obstruction? Next step after that is to use some caustic soda (with caution).

  • sounds like a frozen waste pipe to me

    Hi macman

    Thanks for your speedy reply.

Yes we have tried the plunger to no avail.

I will get some caustic soda when the shops reopen.

But a waste should not (unless it's obstructed, or has too shallow a fall) have any standing water in it to freeze in the first place. Resolve that problem, and it will not freeze.
Try unscrewing the bottle trap or u-bend under the sink (have a bucket under it when you do so) and removing any debris.

    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

    Ive see it done.

Also my self, Ive sieved icing sugar right down to the lumps and then just upturned the sieve and put the lumps in the mix instead of back in the packet.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • I had spent 3 hours yesterday fixing the same problem and it was a frozen outside waste pipe, did not think it could freeze as it does not hold water - but it did somehow.

Possibly a dripping tap. The drops of water freeze as they make their way down ( whatever the fall ) and eventually block the entire pipe.
    Forgotten but not gone.

Also likely to freeze if you have the old cast iron pipes outside. Mine have been frozen for 4 days now. Managed to clear the kitchen one by building a fire around it, but heat wouldn't clear the upstairs bathroom one. No bathroom water for 4 days!!!! Thankfully we had higher temps yesterday, coupled with hot water and lots of salt which managed to clear it.
