Slow data transfer rate - external hard drive

omar have you recently on your slow machine that getting poor transfer rates from have you done list below

1.dumped all temp files.
2.defragged the machines hardrive recently.
3.used the machines harddrive tools to check for bad sectors and repair you will need reboot after done .
4.cleaned your registry.
5. run an full av scan making sure defintions are updated.
6. run a full spyware scan such as malwarebytes make such defintions are updated first.

do all of the above first as does sound like hardware/software issue could be running hidden software which maybe reporting back where ever which would effect read/write rates of first machine drive. check all of above first then i would suggest checking bios is set correctly for usb after that need to find in the original machines hard drive manufacturer then goto there website most manufacturers have repair/diagnostic tool progs you can download from them to check and diagnose faults.

after all of the above is done and nothing found then you have got more serious hardware issues possiably.
let us know how you get on.

p.s. i take it you not running progs like torrents when transfering as this would slow access down if you are. as one example.

Clean computer. No malware, software up to date etc.

Discovered the folder I've been copying which is in fact 8gb contains approximately 20,000 files within it. This may explain why it took some time to copy it over.

Sounds like your USB2.0 ports are only running at USB1 speeds .... I would check that the USB drivers have been installed (from the manufacturers site) , and check in device manager .... if USB2 is working, you should see "Enhanced Host Controller" or similar listed under USB devices.

Still a mystery. Reinstalled drivers and have been seeing that listed under USB devices.

Took 3 hours to copy those 8gb of files.

Should say that the external hard drive is Samsung S2 1TB, Computer Acer Aspire X3200

7 GB should take approxiamately 5 minutes using a USB Hard Drive and XP. This is on my backup system. My question is the external drive a clean drive or has it got some proprietary system on it. My 500 GB came with loads of lovelly useless stuff on it, soon cleaned off with Partition Manager, new version I believe available on some mags this month.

Across the network, 1GB, took around 11 minutes for the 8GB file

it's not just a case of the external drive though/ much still depends on the spec of the machine/ esp. with regards to speed of data transfer/

speed of 2.1ghz, 3gb memory, around 600gb hard drive.
