Sensible wiring for bathroom extractor

I guess 99% of peeps want their bathroom extractor fan to come on when the shower pump starts, then runs on for 5-10+ minutes to pull the damp air out.

Why oh why isn't this catered for by having a switched live tap in the shower unit, to be taken back to the fan controller?

Instead we have half-baked efforts of more pull-cords, switching from the bathroom light, humidity sensors etc.

It's well annoying and wouldn't be dangerous to do as it's all run off an RCD to comply with Part P anyhow.

I'm not sure, RCD or otherwise, I'd want to be bringing mains wiring right inside the shower cubicle if I didn't have to! But I guess it comes down partly to safety, partly to cost - how much cheaper and easier is it to have it on the lighting pull than having to lay extra cabling to meet up with specialist shower taps which may not be compatible with the next tap unit you buy etc etc... Plus of course you don't want to run the shower to run the fan if you only want a bath, or the day after a curry the night before when you just need a little air clearing if you get my (fragrant) drift, si you would have to have a dual system anyway...

But if you think there's a market there, why not develop a prototype and talk to manufacturers? It may be that a complete bathrooms company would like it as a differentiator for their market position as a premium product?

Aye, pretty much a drop in replacement for any standard fan turned on by the light, except rather than running purely by a timer it's got the secondary humidistat that over rides the timer when need be.

We put one in to replace our old fan when it died, and it's surprising how effective it is, especially as we have 4 people in the house all having showers, and we put stuff on the towel rail to dry.
