  • Second hand furniture is always a good place to start. Obviously you don't have to take in any old rubbish, but you can fix something up that someone is just getting rid of. I've recently stripped and repainted two bedside tables, covered the tops with fabric and they look fantastic, plus it's always rewarding when someone comments on your hardwork :)

  • Thanks everyone!!!!

I've cut and paste these ideas in to a list so I can tick things off - so far it's looking a bit grim on the ticks - but slowly slowly!!!

The dinner set that I mentioned above has just been opened (it was a xmas pressie) and deemed "cool". For under a fiver, I don't think you'll get better.
  • I got some nice blue mugs from Marks and Sparks - 50p each :)

For kettles/toasters give argos, tesco, asda or sainsburys a try

anything like tea towels, oven gloves maybe try pound shop, 99p shop, pound stretcher

for crockery try wilko as mentioned or give asda a try
  • Argos have starter kitchen student sets with all the bits and pieces for the kitchen quite a reasonable price.

If you look on ebay you can get some lovely bedroom sets, perhaps pine for 20-50 in total, living room sets, conservatory sets etc, use the find to get listed those local to you first so you can pick up for free.

Ask family if they can donate anything, its amazing what people have in their lofts, once you have some money you can upgrade.

good luck, hope you get sorted.

We have had to do this last month.

Ikea do a great small sofa which was only £80, Klobo i think it was called? Although it's quite a small sofa, it was a great starter for us until we can afford to buy a bigger one. Also, try looking at their clearance section too, we found a nice chair that was only ex-display and a chest of drawers that had the tiniest of damage and it was half off! (We use it for our bedroom TV anyway so nobody can see!)

Edit. Also if you have a homebargains near you, it's a great place to stock up on little things (Mops, dustpans, tea, coffee, loo roll - the nicki one is nicer than andrex imo!)

And i also managed to get egg cups from the 99p store.

The one thing that is really annoying me at the moment is not having an ironing board.. it's not nice having to iron on a towel on the floor but I can't seem to find one cheap enough - my budget is a tenner and i'm not spending a penny over!

Try Wilkinson or Tesco, they usually have their own brand for around a tenner. Failing that, Aldi or Lidl sometimes have them occasionally for reasonable prices :)
