Furnishing a house

Options
Recently bought a new place and as a first timer I need to buy EVERYTHING!

Hoping to pick up some good deals in the sales but feel a little overwhelmed as where to start.

Any tips?
List of essentials that I can work off from?

  • Yah I know how you feel, we bought our first house in September and still don't have much furniture. All our stuff is over the floor and on tables and the mess is starting to get me down.

I would just say, that it's not a bargain unless you were going to buy it anyway. Say you need a wardrobe, I would figure out which one you want first then see if it's in the sale. Maybe make a shortlist of several options, you might get your number two choice for a bargain even if number one isn't reduced.

Have you considered your local 'freecycle' or 'cheepcycle' groups?

You may be able to get some items to tide you over until you can afford to buy new. By then hopefully you will b able to buy reasonable quality stuff that won't fall apart in a few months.

  • I'm on my local freecycle mailing list. But also have saved up a little to by some things :)

Was after a list -if anyone has - of essentials, just to cross-check what I'm compiling.

  • Hi

Congrats on the new place! My starter list was very simple: something to cook on, something to eat on, something to sleep on, something to sit on. They're the basics!

If that's a bit too basic, go room by room - start with the very basics and add to it (bed, bedding, wardrobe / cooker, fridge, toaster etc. Only when you have these can you then add lamp, bedside table / microwave, popcorn maker etc etc)

Take a look at places like Wilkinsons, Poundstretcher for the little things like a washing basket and ironing board. Usually cheap and cheerful, but essential nonetheless.

Try asda homewear, poundland for kitchen items, Home Bargains, Home Sense, Or learn to restore new furniture from bric a brac stores with a chic finish.
Also check amazon, ebay and argos clearance sales some good bargains.

    A good start would be
    HOOVER
    BED
    SET OF TOWELS
    FRIDGE/FREEZER
    SOFA
    COOKER/MICROWAVE
    DRAWERS/WARDROBE
    KETTLE
    TOASTER
    CUTLERY
    KITCHEN SCISSORS
    SET OF CHOPPING KNIFES
    TIN OPENER
    COLANDER
    CHOPPING BOARD
    SET OF PANS
    TEA TOWEL
    OVEN GLOVE
    PLATES/BOWLS
    GLASSES
    MUGS
    PILLOWS
    DUVET
    TV
    IRON/IRONING BOARD
    KITCHEN BIN
    MOP & BUCKET
MOVING BOXES LOTS OF THEM, BROWN TAPE, BLACK MARKER FOR LABELLING BOXES

Use a laundrette if you cant afford a washing machine at first, very cheap to wash and dry.
Good Luck with the move and dont forget to label your kettle and mugs box lol
  • I've recently had to do something similar, although just moving into a rental...landlords were very helpful and bought a load of stuff (place was rented unfurnished), but it was still expensive to kit out! For the kitchen, argos do some brilliant starter sets of pans, utensils, etc, and very reasonably, too! Supermarkets are also a godsend for things like cutlery, crockery, mugs, glasses, etc as well as stuff like bedding and appliances.

    Hope this helps :)
