It definitely wasn't a wind up, he just didn't understand why I would want to open them together (think he'd been single way too long!)
We decided to go for a (kind of!) compromise. We were still up gone midnight so we decided to open them then. We were going to have to leave early to go to my parents so decided to open them then instead so we'd have more time.
Next year I'll definitely be taking some of your suggestions though!

Glad you found a compromise but tbh I find this really really odd! Why, aged 36, would you want to sit on your own in the middle of the night opening presents - and then go back to bed ???
All I can assume is that you had bought some very exciting presents :rotfl::rotfl:0 -
I had the opposite in way as, on Christmas morning, I had to wait until I had given my SIL some wrapping paper which she then took to one room, wrapped my present (bought by my OH on her behalf) and then brought it through and put it under the tree.
What was the point?0
