TV - line transformer

Does anyone know what this is? Took my 5 year old Proline tv in for repair yesterday and this is what the repair guy said it was. He said he would get a precise price today, but said this was the second most expensive part to fix in a tv, so am wondering whether to just buy a new one.

Thanks

That transformer is used to get the high voltage (up to 30,000 volts) needed to fire the beam of electrons from the gun at the back towards the phosphorescent coating on the screen.

It also runs at a much higher frequency than mains electricity, as the way the picture is built up is by scanning a line at a time, then flying back to the start of the next line; this happens at about 15,000 times a second, which is why they sometimes make a high-pitched whine.

I don't know what they cost, but as you're almost guessing already, if it's a modestly priced TV, then it may not be worth mending.
