Way to go, AA!

Annual AA renewal offfer comes through (received only 1 week before auto renewal date!). Joint membership, roadside and homestart for £162. A little searching and I can get all that PLUS relay from RAC for £107. Call to AA to express my disappointment and intention to switch. (Following is paraphrased.)

AA: Sir, you received the standard renewal letter which the FSA obliges us to send out, even though you would qualify for a discount for your low claims made over the last four years.

ME: I must have missed that titbit in your letter. No . . . there's nothing in the letter about that. So what you're saying is that, if I hadn't called you before renewal and took advantage of this low-claim discount which I knew nothing about, you would have just renewed at the higher price and be very grateful for the opportunity.

AA: Sorry - it's the FSA who make us send out the letters. I'll speak to my manager. (Insipid music interlude) Sir, of course we can match RAC's offer.

Even for peanits you have a right to expect better quality monkeys!

It's like most companies, they send out a higher price in the hope you accept... you ring up and boom, price is suddenly lower?

I have joint home, roadside, recovery and onward travel with autoAid for £37.
(You have to pay up front and then claim back but it's seems they do it pretty quickly).
    They also include "accidents".
I'm not up to date on whether the AA/RAC include accidents rather than breakdown. Hitting a pothole or lump of concrete can be considered an accident.

I haven't had the opportunity to use Autoaid but from all the anecdotes it's cracking cover for a cracking price.

downgraded my breakdown insurance as now have motorcycles covered by Carole Nash Insurance FOR FREE!

Gone with Britannia Rescue - got discount for 'Union Membership' - as really bad at remembering to claim back for stuff...

Can't fault their breakdown people, 20 mins response, taken home or to garage if I want.

They call out a local garage and the service I've received from the 2 local garages used has been good. Comparable with the RAC who I used before that.

Autoaid send you back a cheque very quickly you just need to inform the people that you call out you need a "proper" receipt.

However I think people don't want to use them because you always need a credit or debit card on you to pay up front.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

I've always had great service from RAC, never used AA.

Before when my car wouldn't start (battery dead) and there was a huge accident on the M4 near to where I live, they estimated 2 hours (which wasn't unreasonable, no car could move!) they were there within 35 mins with a new battery for me.

Presumably, without the FSA (if indeed they have anything to do with it) the AA would simply charge you the £167 without sending any letters...
  • As said companies like breakdown and insurance will try to get what they can from us if we are too lazy to shop around or simply forget about renewals. AA car insurance quoted me £384 for TPFT renewal, run a comparison search, I got full comp for £344 (striped all extras off ie legal cover, personal accident etc, £43 cashback via quidco too)

Just bought breakdown from RAC last week for £61 (+£20 cashback) for breakdown/recovery. I know autoaid does it cheaper with added extras like onwards expenses but dont really like to pay up front and claim.
