  • All banks have a limit to how much cash you can withdraw in any given day. If they know you are closing the account they can arrange to have the money ready for you therefore bypassing that rule. But I believe they do need notice if it's over their normal daily limit even for closing accounts (if you are hoping to be paid in cash that is)

I believe the format of the money depends upon the amount, if it's small they will pay out in a cash else it'll be a cheque.

Best off asking your local branch although it should be on A&L website or ring up and ask.

That's certainly true for withdrawals via the ATM, but it should be possible to arrange for any amount to be paid in cash, over the counter, at the branch which holds the account.

As you say, a phone call to the branch is the best way to go.

From the current account you can withdraw £250 from the machine and go to the counter and withdraw another £250 per day unless you pre-order it. If you phone customer services you can also arrange to collect cash from your local post office.
  • You can ask for cash to what ever amount that you require if you give them notice. Last Summer my father withdrew £60000 from the Halifax and walked 100 yards down the street to the building society to pay it off his Mortgage.

You need to take security into your decision. It did not bother him as he had delt with large amounts of cash in his job. He also had to stand in the building society for over an hour and watch 2 staff double count the money. He also told the BS that he would be paying the money into them in cash so they could take sucurity into consideration.

I ask him why he did it and his answer was that he had worked hard for the money and by seeing it in cash it meant something too him.

    I suppose....

You probably get twice as good an experience asking for it in £10s than you do in £20s.

Getting it paid out in £50s is only for the 'a bit of a show off' type of customer.

And asking for £60,000 in £1 coins could well be a totally kneetrembling experience:-

At 9.5grms for each £1 coin, £60,000 would weigh 1,255.5lbs (NB. There are 2,240lbs in 1 ton)
  • most banks do have limits even when closing

ie Halifax is £1200 cash per day at counter, unless notice has been given
