Would imagine that the payment system is fully automated and therefore no human interaction to spot the discrepency between front end display price to back end card payment price.
I know with a previous employer the front end did a simple 2p authorisation and then afterwards the back end cancelled the 2p authorisation and requested "the full amount" - if declined it would try a further 2 times and then it came up on an exception report.
As far as I am aware this isnt uncommon practice within corporate systems.All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers
