That is a good question.
what you're looking for is .htaccess support.
EDIT : Previously posted link was from 2002 !0 -
You could also add simple password protection for pages using php or any other scripting language.
Most personal sites get virtually no visitors anyway.0 -
Thanks for the replys
I was after a free simple web site that would require a password to log in and see the pages.

Is there any specific content you're trying to share? There are plenty of solutions if you're just after say, a photo album, or videos, or various files0 -
Thanks for the reply
Basically i would like to set up a website, and post pictures of my family and the news of the family, but have a facility to password the site from everyone viewing the pages, unless they log in.0 -
Wordpress is a good option, but you don't need to go to the trouble of password protecting each page.
In Settings / Privacy you can set it so only named Wordpress users can access.
Going to the blog pages just brings up a login screen.
Your users would need to sign up to Wordpress to get a username and password, but they don't have to start a 'blog' of their own, just use their login details to view yours.
To signup all you need is an email address.
Blogger dot com is very similar, using Settings / Privacy, but since it is Google owned you can use your Gmail login email address and password, or create new ones just for that purpose.
Although it is secure, some people may have some privacy concerns with Google.0
