Should I call the RSPCA

My neighbour has a little dog - I dont know the breed, its tiny and looks like a ball of fluff. Pretty cute. A bit like Benji but more fluffy hair. I know thats a crap description!

Any way, the dog is always left outside in the back garden. Recently, as you all know, its gone a lot colder and its started to snow heavily where I live. Despite this the dog is still always left outside. I work from home and I can always here it barking and I have often looked out the window and felt sorry for it being stuck in the cold. It has shelter but there is no door to keep out the cold.

I know nothing about dogs! May be Im being OTT and its quite possible that dogs can tolerate such environments. I just feel sorry for it.

  • Difficult to tell, without hearing the bark I would say.

My dog (Border Collie) loves the outside at the moment and refuses to come inside. I worry that someone will call the RSPCA on us as I feel I'm being mean as I have to leave her out if I need to pop out and she won't come in as I am heavily pregnant and can't chase her round the garden to come in. She can be out there and not come in from around 9 in the morning until hubby gets home at 3/4ish (he does go up the garden and chase her or catch her and bring her in)....I leave the back door open (not at all mse) when I am in but she doesn't bother coming in at all. She chases the birds between the trees all day.

On the rare ocassion she wants in and the door is shut she will bark with a high pitched bark which is persistent (as opposed to the excited I'm going to get you bark which she uses when the excitement of chasing the birds gets too much!). On the one ocassion that I didn't get to the door quick enough for her, she jumped up and opened the door herself.......

I'm sure folk will think I'm cruel (my mil does) but as I challenged her...if you can get her to come in without having to drag her by the collar.....
  • I once had a terrier who would sit outside all day on the rain, someone reported me to the RSPCA the chap came round and found my dog outside in the rain looking miserable....................came round the corner and the conservatory door was open and I was in the kitchen (door to which was open too!) he said he was just coming to the door to leave me a note asking me to contact him then he saw that my daft dog could have been inside in the warm and dry!

If the dog has food, shelter and water then it is unlikely the RSPCA will be too concerned. Most kennels don't have doors. It's not the way I would chose to keep a dog though.
