Locking old Threads

Probably been asked before but would it be possible to have threads that are over say two years old to be still readable but automatically locked from new posting ? Board guides would need the ability to be able to re-enable threads that are still relevant or on going.
Reason I ask is that on the 'Ebay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales' list that I frequent we seem to get quite a few newbies resurrecting very old threads (a recent one dated back to 2004) rather than starting new ones.
Not Sure whether it's inexperience of the system of if they are trolls or incognito company employees slagging off a competitor.

To be honest once a thread hasn't had any replies for a year or so, maybe two years at a push they might as well just delete it altogether to save space.
As far as I can tell the same questions seem to go round and round on a loop anyway!0
