Example of MBNA customer service!

Options
Got a telephone call this evening about my Gold MBNA card which I have not used for over 4 years. I have not activated the card I received about a month ago and told the person on the end of the phone this -'' It does not matter sir, as a valued customer of MBNA I can offer you a low cost balance transfer to clear your other credit cards''.
I told him '' I don't have any outstanding balances on cards'' - shuffle of paper and silent pause '' Well would you be interested in transferring a balance to your current account to pay for Xmas!'' - well no I said I have already budgeted for this thank you but there is something you can do for me which I have been meaning to do for ages - YES HE SAYS ''I want you to cancel the card as I have no use for it''
Sorry says he I can't do that for you I'm on the balance transfer team - you will have to speak to customer services. Well can't you transfer me to customer services - sorry no you will have to ring number on back of card for customer services!
Well I ring the number on back of the card only to be told that as I was ringing after 7pm they could not close my account today but to try again tomorrow.
You couldn't make it up could you!
 :(

MBNA do seem one of the more desperate to keep accounts open at any cost. Then again they have never called me up or wrote offering a balance transfer offer.

Did they mention what rate they could offer you? I'm going to ring them today and see if i can get my £7k credit i have available transferred to my current account. What sort of deals do they offer? Can i negotiate on the BT fee?

    Thanks

I had a similar experience with MBNA had two Cards with them one that had transferred form RBOS to them. Anyway phoned up to cancel one, and keep my other Card with a £2.5K Limit which completely confused them as the other card had a £17K Limit, but they agreed.

Then get the phone call offering balance transfers, but I have no other balances I reply, then the Current Account offering, no thanks say I for £2K it's not worth it. No they reply you have a £19.5K Credit Limit!!! So despite my instructions they just added the two together!!! I was not happy with this so asked to close the Account but to cut a long story short I took £15K into my Current Account at 0% Interest until March 07 and no balance transfer fees, with minimum payment of £5/Month which I have set up a DD for. I'm using the Cash to save me interest on my Offset Mortgage with First Direct and happy to report that was back in August and I still have the £15K in my account which will go straight back to them in March 07.

Then the account will be closed !!! unless they offer similar again ;)
    Cheers

  • Well I phoned back today to cancel the card and was offered nothing to stay with them.
I should be getting a confirmation letter within the next 10 days.

I was offered this: £7k to be transferred into my account, no fee and an BT rate of 0.9%!

They had already offered you a BT and an SBT, what else could they offer you to stay?

A fee free BT or SBT? 24 months 0% on purchases? ....
    Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries

It was the balance transfer team that had offered me the BT and SBT but they could not close the account for me.
I had to ring the card closure line - different number - to close the account and they offered nothing.
