Car insurance cancelled without my consent years ago - declare it?

Hi Folks,
I have searched and searched and can't find an equivalent post so hope someone can help or advise.
In approx 2001 / 2002 I took out a policy with (I think) More Than, paid in full in advance, sent them my ncb info, happily went about my business until one day I wanted to update my policy and found out I had been driving around for 8 months without insurance as it was cancelled without my knowledge!!
Anyway that was the past, from memory, I think I got an apology and definitely got proof of NCB for the year as compo as I complained like hell etc.
Now, I never thought about it until recently and wonder if I still have to declare having "cancelled insurance" or not as I can't find any letter of apology anymore?
I am worried that my recollection isn't as sharp as it was, and I don't think I ever got confirmation that it won't remain on my record so don't know if I should declare it now, explain the situation and will it cause me problems getting cover from now on?
Any thoughts on
1) should i declare it and leave it at that?
2) should i explain it and let the new insurer decide?
3) was it too long ago to count anymore?
3) what impact is it likely to have on my premiums if it was valid
Thanks for advice

If this was definitely an error by the insurer, then no need to mention it.
It's not too long ago not to matter - insurers usually ask if you have "ever" had a policy cancelled.
If this was declared many inurers wouldn't quote you - and you might have to use a specialist insurer with higher premiums. (Though if not declared and should have been, then it gives any insurer a way to invalidate your policy in the event of a claim)0 -
Hmmmm, I'm now not sure what to do - morethan are known on review centre website for being completely incompetent (this being fair or otherwise, but not the debate here!) and they may have given me my 1 year NCB but may not have struck off the cancellation from records - I might have to look much harder and hope there is a letter of proof (fingers crossed!)
Is there ANY way to get all records held in my name and under my previous addresses??
Surely however, if I don't declare something a big red flag pops up, red beacons flash and awoooga horns blare in the call centre to tell them that I have 'lied' and then not insure me automatically - or is that just me being naiive? Bearing in mind I have had 1 experience some time ago when an assistant misheard me and as soon as she typed in the wrong info, it came up that I had provided incorrect information and they couldn't cover me....0 -
worth looking into a data access request to More Than? Or to whoever keeps the cancelled policy database?0

worth looking into a data access request to More Than? Or to whoever keeps the cancelled policy database?
If you think it is possible given it was many years ago now (I thought data was only ever kept a maximum of 6 years, but who knows these days!)
I wonder how I go about 'formally' requesting data from companies, anyone know of a standard letter?
Wonder if I will open a can of worms by digging around, would hate to go about getting it struck off my record given the time lapse (the FOS would probably not cover it on their terms of service, will look in to this though)0 -
I have trawled through morethans website, seems I can to a request for info held on me from them - for a small fee of course.0

The fee will be a standard subject access fee of £10.
Simply write to the company concerned giving your name and address details for the period in question and tell them you would like them to release to you , under the data protection act , all information which they hold on you .
Remember to send the letter recorded delivery so you have proof. They will then have 40 days to provide you with the information you have requested.
P.S The last time we used a subject access request on a company they contacted us after they received our letter asking for proof of identity so it may well be useful to inclose a photocopy of a passport or driving licence . This will avoid any delay as if they have to write to you requesting this info the 40 days does not start until they actually receive it back from you.The loopy one has gone :j0
