But he can change the registered keeper. Don't need to own the car to do that.

Quite why one would want to do that is beyond me... and no business of mine either. :D

As has already been said... registered keeper and owner are not necessarily the same person.

    Quite right.
But the owner has decided who is responsible for the vehicle, and it's a condition of the loan.
They have also said if they decide to pass on responsibilty to a third party, they must pay in full any outstanding finance.

"The V5C is sent to the registered keeper who is the person responsible for registering and taxing the vehicle. This may not be the owner of the vehicle."

As to why they insist, read
    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/AdviceOnBuyingAndSellingAVehicle/DG_4022406

If someone owed you several thousand for a car, you'd want them to comply with this, not pass it of to a third party who you had no claim over?
  • how will the finance company ever find out and why would they even care? as long as he keeps up with payments he will not here a peep

    Maybe he won't be caught.
If they do check with the DVLA, as the owner, could he afford to pay back the lump sum if they ask him?
Or would we all bail him out?
So, would they care if he appeared to sell a car on finance?
    Probably.
Even I can see if the number of owners goes up from 1 to 2 on the autotrader website free of charge.
  • even if the "other owner" is his wife?

Also, what do you mean by "would we all bail him out?" - why would we have to bail him out? ::S
  • The OP wants to buy his wife a car on finance. Many insurers these days will not insure you unless you are the registered keeper, so he needs his wife to be a registered keeper. I know many people who have done this e.g. parents who have bought their kids cars or a wife b'day present for her husband. Its happens all the time so I dont get why some of you think its illegal.

Of course he could also, include the car in his insurance and have his wife as an additional driver. However, its possible that his wife may have a better insurnace record and NCP then him and so it might be cheaper for the wife to isnure herself. All these are assumptions, Ill leave it up to the OP to clarify.

I don't know any insurer that won't insure a spouse's car, both mine and my wife's are owned by the other, no extra charge and stated on the policy.

May be the OP wife gets a better cheaper deal by getting insurance herself compared to a shared one on her husbands policy. This is the only reason I can think as to why he would want a seperate policy for her. For her to get a seperate individual insurance she needs to be a registered keeper.

No you don't, as above I am registered keeper of the car my wife has insured and driven for years, and she is the registered keeper of the one I insure and drive for years.
And I insure two other cars I own in my name that I am keeper of. With spouses it makes no difference who owns/keeps/insures them.

I hate it when OP disappear! where is he...

What you are saying is interesting. So the OP wife can get seperate insurance despite her not being the legal owner or registered keeper? That dont sound right to me but I'll take your word for it.

Didn't we have a thread on Motoring not that long ago where the Registered Keeper was a lady, but it was her father (who didn't have a driving licence) was the hirer under the HP agreement? The Finance company found out and wanted the car back.
