One-time use credit card number?

Some years ago (when I had no use for such a thing) I remember reading about a system which generated single transaction Mastercard credit card numbers for use online.

I've just spent the last half hour searching but cannot find any current similar system.

Does anyone know of one?

Thanks. There was me hoping that Paypal's system would return.

It does exist in a way. You can buy a prepaid credit card load it up with whatever value is needed and use it online. A 3V voucher purchased through payzone may also be what you are after.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Doesn't sound like what I'm after.

I have credit and debit cards (too many in fact) and, normally, a small credit balance on Paypal.

I just want to avoid putting one of my credit card details onto an unknown site that doesn't accept Paypal.

    It depends.

They exist in the US. I don't know whether companies issuing them service the UK.

    There are descriptions at http://www.bankrate.com/brm/news/cc/20021011a.asp , http://www.marksanborn.net/security/one-time-use-credit-cards/ and http://www.breadmarket.co.uk/credit/virtual-credit-cards.php

A Google search for virtual credit cards will provide more info.

There's a FAQ here if that's of any use.

I wanted to do similar recently and used Neteller (www.neteller.com).

You need to open/have a Neteller account, load your account via debit card, credit card, Ukash etc. , then make your online purchase using a Net+ Virtual Prepaid Mastercard:

It may not exist now but I do recall publicity about exactly this product, some years ago. Can't remember who by.
