Crass Nationwide staff pushing Gold Visa

in Credit cards
Went to a NW branch today to withdraw cash on my debit card. Asked for clean notes as I'm changing in Asia.
Cashier: Oh Sir, do you use your debit card overseas?
Me: Well, not any more since it's become expensive.
Cashier: Yes we've introduced charges, but you can avoid them by using our gold visa card - it is free overseas.
Me: It isn't free, particularly if you want cash.
Cashier: Sure, there's a charge for cash, but purchases are free.
Me: No, outside Europe you charge 1%.
Cashier: No. It's completely free.
Me: I have one already. You charge 1%, claiming you are "passing on" Visa's fee. So now I use Abbey Zero.
Cashier: They will pass on the same fee - it's not our charge, it's Visa's fee.
All nonsense of course. As it's Christmas I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she's misunderstood their own T+Cs rather than is deliberately trying to be misleading.

You should have asked her for more information on how the Santander Zero Mastercard would pass on a fee from Visa.0

You're very kind. I know it's the Christmas season but there are limits!
There's no way a bank/building society official should be making false claims about their product and denigrating a competitor's. If it were me, I would make a complaint, and if you're still feeling kind, just an informal complaint to the person's manager.

I bet you Email 'points of view' every week Roger?0 -
I would complain too (and I don't write in to poin t of view either).
It's simply not acceptable for staff to lie or make claims about stuff they don't know about.0 -
Thanks for the comments.
Well, I was rushing around to get to Heathrow and therefore anticipating further trouble (which didn't happen).
I asked for clean bank notes and she went to alot of trouble to get me nice ones. So I just let this rumpus pass. I choose my battles these days - increasingly can't be bothered.
Lame excuses, I know!0
