Ashbourne Managment!!!

Hello to all,
I joined a local gym just over 2 years ago as they where running a promotion. All was going well and I was enjoying my time at the gym until my wife noticed that for 18 months the gym had been taking my DD payment out TWICE!
I was understanding and calmly explained what was happening to the gym manager who advised me that Ashbourne Membership managment run his billing/membership and he would sort it- which he did.
Earlier this year I told the gym owner who I see regularly that I would be leaving the area to join Sandhurst and would be ending my membership and canceling the DD in Nov 2010. All was fine.
I have since recieved demanding letters from Ashbourne saying that I owe them several months payments as well as administration costs for canceling my DD. When I phoned and told them I had moved and advised the gym owner that I was leaving they said "tough luck" and that the owner does not recall any such conversation!
I have now also been threatened with being registered as a non-payer or whatever on credit agencies. Can they do this? I was told by the owner and the staff when I joined that I could cancel my DD when I move away.
HELP!!!
