The 'truth' of Father Christmas

Some people tell their kids there is no Father Christmas. I have been impressed by so many of the low cost gifts that can make Christmas special...however, I would like to say, keep the magic. It costs nothing and he DOES exist aka the spirit of kindness. Pity we cannot bottle that for all year round.

Each to their own. I personally think it's better to tell kids about St Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra.
  • i'm a believer :j I have been Santa's little helper now for a number of years through the PTA at school and the Boys Brigade and i love it .... the look on the kids faces when he arrives into the party is all worth it!:T
 while i knit i think

  • A little bit of magic stops kids growing up to quick. Life would be so boring without the innocence of children.

although I would like to have the orginal santa claus/ father christmas / St Nick type of figure up wearing the blue or green clothes than the Santa Cola in the red outfit- maybe someone should start a facebook campaign to kick it into touch

My kids love the idea of christmas and elves - it's a very magical time that I wish would never end but unfortunatley it will soon as m oldest is 7... but I'll keep the magic alive as long as I can (because me and OH love it too)

  • Definitely keep the magic.
My brother reckons if he had kids he wouldn't go along with the Father Christmas stuff, but I think that would be so dreary and depressing. Childhood is all about imagination and magic and possibilities. Who needs cynicism and cold hard realism in an under-10 year old?
I can't think of anything worse.

i must have been one of the few that was never told to believe the cocacola santa story!
we were brought up to appreciate the "magic" of winter and saw christmas as a time for family not consumerism

there was nothing wrong with that, same as how we didnt believe in the easter bunny and other such nonsense

We're teaching our small daughter that Christmas is a time of year that is cold and miserable outside and so we try extra hard to make sure that inside where our family is is warm and full of love and to spread those feelings of warmth and love as far as we can. Santa is the sort of embodiment of love and giving gifts and joy and being good to others, and while some people believe he's a real person we know he isn't - but we don't tell other people that because if believing in Santa brings them joy it's all part of the season and it would be mean to tell them the truth.

We're starting a tradition of coffee, fruit and chocolate giving to any local homeless people we descend upon today.

  • when i was about 13 my dad knew i didnt believe and he made me write a list, a different list to normal, with some different things on. then i put it in an envelope and wrote santa on it. then i set fire to it and put it in the gas fire! later the ashes had gone and the original letter appeared on xmas morning.

i still dont know how he did it, but it was definitely magical! i am now 26 and we all still get stocking and santa brings the presents. then we get one present from my mum and dad and everything else from santa!
