Can't stop exs debt letters coming to my address

Options
I am writing in the hope that I can get a definitive answer or even some sound advise on how to stop debbt letters for my ex coming to my address. We split up about 18 months ago and he moved out, due to the circumstances of the break up I have no forwarding address for him.
I know that he set up a plan with a debt management company for his credit card with MBNA and personal loan with Natwest. I recieve regular letters from both companies addressed to him. I have contacted MBNA several times and completed relevant forms over the telephone and each time told that the letters would stop. Natwest were their usual helpful selves and basically said they can't do anything (even put notes on his file that I have informed them he no longer lives there) unless my ex contacts them, which is a very unlikely senorio.
From what I can gather my ex has now stopped paying his debt management all together even tho there is still an outstanding balance as Natwest have now issued debt collectors on their behalf.
My aim is to get through to these companies and stop the letters but I am also worried on if these debts can still have an impact on my crediit rating even though they are soley in his name.

  • Do you know where any family/friends of his live, or maybe his workplace? Even if he moved jobs someone may know where. Ask them for an address, say a cheque arrived in the post (you opened by mistake) i'm sure if its for his benefit someone could help you.

Hi, Just return the letters marked with "unknown at this address" - it WONT affect your credit or blacklist your house because the debt goes against the person (in this case, your ex)

Do not worry about these, They might try and pull a fast one and try and get you to pay up but just ignore all correspondance as ultimatley, it has nothing to do with you. If they start ringing, just say, "he doesnt live here, remove my number" and hang up but i definitley wouldnt waste any more time on this

Hope on over to Debt Free forum if you would rather write a letter, im sure someone over there will have a template HTH xx

It will only effect your credit rating if you had any joint finances with him. If you did there will be an association on your credit file linking you to him. If this is the case you can have a note put on your credit file stating that you are no longer linked.

If you have never had any joint finances there is nothing to worry about, just return the letters 'not known at this address'

Have you checked your credit file for any links?

  • Don't open them, put them back in the post marked "not at this address", contact the credit reference agencies to dissociate yourself from his financial activities if yours are all separate.

  • Any letters that come address to someone not living at your property should be returned unopened (there is usually a return address on the envelope) to the person that sent them. You just write 'return to sender - not known at this address' and let them track him down. Eventually the letters will stop. If you get any phone calls just tell them that he no longer lives there, and hasn't done since XXX date - again these phone calls will eventually stop. If you don't open the letters you won't know whats in them so won't be able to stress about them - its his business not yours so don't worry too much about it. It might be wise to get a copy of your credit report to check that there is nothing in joint names. If there isn't then you have nothing to worry about at all - they are his debts and they won't affect you in any way.

  • Hey

Thanks all for your responses.I think my next step is to make sure I am definately dissasociated from him. My main concern was if the house was black listed because of this, so I breathe a sigh of relief!! : )

    Merry Chrisytmas and Thanks again.

When my ex and I seperated I had the exact same thing.Drove me round the twist and felt that I was banging my head against the wall.In the end out of pure frustration I did a free search on 1 9 2 .com and found his new address and just put on future letters not known here look on 192.com for new address. It took forever but finally the letters for him have stopped coming to my address.Same when a bailiff turned up at my address for him told him to search that site and they would find him.
