Laptop restore

Options
Because of my laptop (Toshiba/Vista) not working properly I decided to do a factory restore using the recovery disks.
I get the following message however -

(WARNING) C:\WIMD088.tmp (Uncompress File :<seq.90-> file corrupted in block at offset 0190F449)

It then retrys a few times with the same message nad finally

[Error: 1392] C:\WIMD088.tmp. [resourceExtractToFileByStruct: seq. 50> -> Ucompress or WinCopyFileEx failed]
Error restoring image.
The file or directory is corupted and unreadable.
ERROR: ImageX could not apply VISTA V:\HDDRecovery\SWImg\06491XSP.SWM Index 2 FROM HDD to C:!
Press any key to continue...

Any advise gratefully appreciated.

this may take a long time...

hold down the window key and press R, type CMD and press return (or just go to the command prompt)
now in this dos box type CHKDSK /F /R and press return and watch some tv.

looks like a bad spot in the disk, or your disk is going bad.
  • Just to be clear I assume this happens when your running the recovery on your laptop right?

Can you confirm which options you select during the recovery? There maybe a non-destructive option and a destructive option? (It's been a while since I've restored a Toshiba laptop). If your using the non-destructive method try the destructive method which should re-create the partion table and format the HDD (So all your personal data will be erased).

Do you know how to enter the BIOS on this laptop to check if there is an option to check the HDD for failure?

If not there are tools available for free online to check this for you.

If your not sure please supply the model number of the laptop.

if its a Toshiba Vista then you access the recovery partition by pressing F8 on startup and selecting "Repair Your Computer" and then choose the Toshiba recovery option (also some early vista came with discs)

There is only one restore process through the Toshiba Recovery Program and that is a full destructive one. (Side note, if you have a Recovery Partition, Always make recovery DVD's as it saves time and money later on in case of HDD fault)

If its not restoring from built in recovery(if it has one) then either the partition is corrupted (very unlikely) or a hardware fault has ocored (usually HDD)

Download Seatools and burn the .iso to a CD (program made by seagate but works with all types of HDD's)
    http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=seatooldreg&vgnextoid=480bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

    *Edit*
Use seatools to diagnose HDD fault, if HDD is faulty you will need to replace it (usually a 2.5" SATA on Vista) and reinstall the Operating system (either through Toshiba supplied Recovery Discs or Discs made on the Toshiba Or a OEM/Retail Vista/Windows7.
  • Thanks for the replies, I had tried first of all doing a full system restore using the partitioned recovery programme, after that Windows wouldn't start up at all. So then I tried the restore using the recovery disks I burned when the laptop was new.
I'm a bit of a numpty with computers so talk of BIOS & iso are a bit beyond me. :(
Looks like I'll have to pay to have it fixed (if it is fixable).
    THanks everyone for their time.:T
