New scam email circulating....

Apologies if posted in wrong place or posted previously

http://blogs.zdnet.com/Spyware/?p=854

the above link refers to the new email being sent (I received one today).

I wouldn't normally have been concerned, but it is quite different as it purports to come from a one of several reputable retailers, and could fool a number of people due to this. The usual spam spotting rules apply (it starts "dear customer"), but my flatmate, an otherwise sensible person, wanted to open the attachment as he was that worried (though he has seen such emails before and knows what to look for). I must admit that this is the first time I have seen one like this and I was worried myself for a little bit!

If you have got one of these, do the usual and bin it.

  • Thanks for this, could be a very difficult one for some people. Luckily my OH is the only other user and she always asks when one of these crops up. My only worry is DD at Uni, she is nowhere as paranoid as I am and could be caught out

Hmm... personally, even if I did think that it was genuine my first port of call would be to check my credit card statement rather than open an attachement.

Saying that, as said, it is worded very oddly - I thought they had been clever for a while by leaving the currency sign out of the price to allow it to be an international scam but then they spoil their good work by giving USA states as the potential warehouses. (plus why would Dell be emailing you about a Sony laptop?)

Oh I agree. I didn't open the attachment (never do!) and a while yet til next statement. the other signs pointed out are a dead giveaway, but having discussed this with some colleagues, it does show a change away from normal tactics and these spammers seem to be getting more clever.
