No Proof of Purchase??

Hi everyone

I hope someone can possibly help me out with a problem??

My stepson purchased a coat two weeks ago from a well known Sports Shop. He had been saving up his own money for a long time to buy the coat – it was a Fred Perry and cost him £109.99 which, as I am sure you will agree, is a lot of money for a 17 year old!!

My partner (his father) was with him when he purchased the coat – he paid the full amount in cash.

Less than two weeks later, the zip on the coat has broken. Unfortunately, he has lost the receipt!! My partner and stepson have tried to exchange the coat at the store but they are refusing point blank as we do not have a proof of purchase – this is regardless of my partner verifying the purchase and them both being able to pinpoint the exact date and time of purchase and the sales assistant who sold them the coat.

Do we have any recourse? The coat was such a lot of money and it is clearly faulty. We are not looking for a refund – merely an exchange for a coat with a functioning zip!!

The shop is adament that they will not exchange the coat or refund us the money but I am loathe to just accept this.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Debbie

I can guess which well known sports shop this was! They're known for being very reluctant to take returns.

Is it worth contacting the manufacturer?

Otherwise I think it's going to be a small claims court job.
Worth writing to head office first, I'd have thought, though.

does the sales person remember you / the transaction,
I'm sure I've read this before from consumer direct but here's something from Derby council which might help
"Do I need a receipt to get a refund?
Basically, the answer is no but you will need another proof of purchase. This could be a bank statement indicating the purchase, credit card counterfoil or even a witness who saw you make the purchase. A receipt however is obviously the best proof of purchase you can get so look after it until you are sure that the goods are okay.

Even if he does, it would not be in his interest to say so.

I imagine [STRIKE]Sports Direct[/STRIKE] the retailer would take a dim view of an employee supporting a customer for a refund in this way.
  • Without any proof of purchase you are really going to struggle I am afriad.

Can you not take it to a seamstress or something and have it repaired? Not the ideal situation but little else you can do.
    Thinking critically since 1996....
  • Thanks everyone for your very kind help! I'm going to write a letter to the store today, expressing my displeasure, also sending a copy to their Head Office.

I think the reason I'm so upset is because it was my stepson's - he's paying to put himself through college (with our help) whilst desperately trying to find an apprenticeship and saved up for ages to buy this d*mn coat. To have it fail like this in less than two weeks has really upset him.

    Thanks again,
    Debbie

PS...........It was JD Sports!! Just be warned............make sure you keep your receipts!
