Egg account and direct debit

We cleared off my husband's Egg card about a month ago. I cancelled the direct debit and today we got a letter in saying that we need to have a direct debit set up, even if we have nothing owing on the account.

We have actually overpaid and have over £60 credit on the account. Do I need to write to them to ask them to close the account and ask for the money back?

It is indeed a condition of holding the card that you have an active DD set up.

Have you had a statement since you made the clearing payment? If not, then best to wait until you have because if the balance was interest bearing there will be some residual interest to come off the "over £60 credit" balance.

He only gets online statements. The interest has already been taken off.

Will he get the money back or will I have to re-instate the direct debit first?

They'll close the account (and refund the in-credit balance) without reinstating the DD, if asked.

Thank you. I feel stupid closing the direct debit now. We don't want the account any more anyway. We were just glad we got it cleared. I never thought about how we'd get the overpaid money back. :o

They'll pay any credit balance back into the account you had the dd set up for, thats what they did with mine when I closed my account earlier this year. I also cancelled my dd when I cleared my balance, and they sent me the same letter. I sent them a secure message saying that I wasnt going to re-instate the dd, and that Id pay off my last statement balance manually with my registered debit card. My last statement was for 52p, so I sent them a £1 via online banking, as it wouldnt let me pay less than £1, and once the account was closed, they credited the 46p into my bank account
Debt free and staying that way!

If you still have the card then the easiest way to use up the credit is to spend.
If you can get petrol you might even be able to get the exact amount.
