Lost NI number - advice please

I would have preferred to find an alternative where he could find the number himself and avoid the conflict.
Avoiding conflict would be a good idea.
Some random observations:
Payroll require an NI number. Your OH does not know his NI number. Payroll almost certainly do not have a mechanism for checking that the number provided is his. He's going to leave in a few weeks anyway. When an error is made an a wrong NI number is used it should be possible to work with HMRC to get the snafu fixed retrospectively.
Surely you can find an innovative solution in here somewhere
As an aside, and I apologise because this is not the question you raised, once this is over he really needs to sort out his paperwork otherwise he'll be going through this sort of thing again and again. When he tries to create a CV and has to guess at months/years worked ... when an old employer closes down so can't provide a reference ... when two companies merge and stuff up their combined accounts records and the mortgage company want confirmation of his salary ... these are the times when being able to pull out a file and photocopy a payslip or P60 or a contract are invaluable.
So point him towards a stationery store in the new year and get him to buy a lever arch file and dividers or even a box file. Each payslip, P45, P60, P11D etc etc gets thrown into the box and once a year sorted through. Every 10th year go out an buy a new box.
I promise you that the effort will be re-paid a hundredfold.
