  • Might as well do ourselves in now then?

Just as long as you don't do it by putting your head in the gas oven - you wouldn't want to leave your loved ones with a huge gas bill as well as all the other stuff to sort out.
  • Lower gas consumption will lead to lower profits for the energy companies which will lead to companies increasing their charges which will lead to higher energy bills which will lead to another round of energy conservation which will lead to lower gas consumption which will lead to lower profits for the energy companies which will lead to companies increasing their charges....

Alternatively, everyone uses more gas, which leads to the government increasing bills by introducing green energy incentives, which leads to higher energy bills which leads to reduced consumption which leads to lower profits for the energy companiese which leads to companies increasing their charges....

Lets face it the energy companies line their directors pockets, the government gets its VAT, we as consumers are stuffed whatever we do.

A bit drastic but it would hamper both the energy companies and the Government. And as well as cutting your energy bills could also help reduce your carbon footprint and the over population problem. :p

My gas consumption reduced substantially(~19000 to ~12500 KwH) when house was cavity filled and roof insulated under the then government scheme. Numerous pensioner households have done the same. We surely have quite an effect on averages.

exactly the same as the water companies - who all hark on about using less water , being more efficient - and as soon as people are using less water , then the prices go up by record amounts - why? because the shareholders are not earning enough money (oops i meant investing in infrastructure......)
  • Clearly we should re-nationalize them, print some more money the build the power stations we desperately need and bask in our eternal low prices unaffected by worldwide demand as a result of the staggering efficiency of everything the government does.

There are no easy answers to this one I'm afraid :(

~19..yes indeed, there are no easy answers.

The days of "cheap" gas and electric are over.

People need to get used to that.

Its time to use less energy,be more energy efficient, insulate our homes, wear appropriate clothing in winter and seriously consider whether you really should have an appliance such as a gas combi boiler in the house as for many, they are inappropriate, wasteful of resources and energy and put additional strain on supply networks.

Also, dont expect OFGEM to save you. They are simply a regulatory body which isnt there specifically to serve the public.

They are not above putting their collective snouts in the trough either.

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    "Electricity too cheap to meter"

Irrespective of public or private sector, energy production is all paid for by the consumer/tax payer. This needs long term investment and planning, when did that last meaningfully occur in the UK?
