Fully Comp Insurance & Extreme Weather HELP

  • I actually had the car serviced about 8 weeks ago. The anti freeze was topped up to full prior to this problem - even AA breakdown guy said anti freeze does not work under minus 6c.

It sounds like a case of writing off car without any fault of my own by looks of things.

    :D

Absolute nonsense. I have driven for many years in Canada at -20 to -30 degrees celsius, with absolutley no problems, and with no block heater. Car would even start the first time usually!

The garage filled your car with watered down antifreeze (or maybe just water it seems!) - I think your only option is to engage in legal action with the garage. This has nothing to do with your insurer.

That's your trump card (as long as it is documented), it would probably help if you could get a sample of the coolant to see exactly how much antifreeze is in there and then go chase the garage to repair it using court action if necessary.

Let's face it, I bet he used some back street place. Paid cash and has no paperwork.

He'll have more luck peeing in the wind.

Indeed, the garage is just going to say .... It was OK when it left here mate.;)

You obviously know me very well. It has been serviced at manufacturer's dealership and I paid it on my AMEX Platinum if that helps?

Collect all the evidence (including any report from the AA about the condition of your car when they attended). Can you get hold of any of the coolant, or has it all gone? And do speak to your solicitor about this.

Surely the owner / driver of a vehicle is the person responsible for ensuring that the anti freeze is topped up and to the correct strength for prevailing conditions.

    Or am I missing something?
  • It seems like people like inactive "have a go" at other's misfortune.

Anyway, if you were in same position how would you feel? I am already looking to buy other cars so not a big deal, just wanted to see if there was anything I could do and I probably will take up the matter with the garage.

He wasn't "having a go", purely stating a fact.

I just want to thank everyone who geniunely offered me good advice and support.

To others who tried to rub it - good luck - remember what goes round comes round.

As for me, it's a lesson learnt that even when you pay a garage £80 an hour to service your car, it does not necessarily means a competent mechanic will look at your car.
