Just married tax rebate?

Options
hi everyone,

about 12 days ago i got married, so now obviously my wife has just lost all her child tax, working tax credits etc straightaway, since they take into account my wages straight away.

now my question is since this has happened am i entiteled to any kind of tax rebate since the revenue count both my self and my wifes wages together for any claim?

has anyone got any experience with this?

many thanks.

  • Married peoples tax allowance is only for people born before 1935 unfortunately, so all you can do is a new tax credit claim as a married couple.

  • Does it mean that now when we are married the only benefit we are entitled to it's a child benefit?

Tax credits are based on household income, so whether you married or not, she'd have lost them when you moved in together if your joint earnings exceed the thresholds. I presume you weren't living together beforehand were you - otherwise it sounds like she shouldn't have been claiming even before you were married.

No - you are also now entitled to pass assets between you both free of inheritance tax when the first of you dies.

the problem is that even now we are married we are not living together since there is no married quaters available just now. hence why i am asking about tax rebate since my wife has lost the majority of benifits apart from the obvious child benifit.
