this is what i mean about the hassle , id rather cancel this transaction if i could and relist them and also block this ebayer

if i contact the buyer and say this is not a safe transtion can i do this , also if thay so they have sent the money what do i do ?
    thanks

If they say they have sent the money ask for the tracking number (at least to find out if they have posted something) and wait for envelope to arrive

If they haven't posted money yet ask them to set up a paypal account or cancel the transaction (make sure those are the only two options you give them)
    :AWhatever it is - I didn't do it!:A

Hi thanks for replying ive pm them and said please dont send money and to contacted me asap ;.
if they say money sent i will ask for a tracking n/b as you suggested and if no money sent i ask them for a paypal payment or cancel the transaction (who cancels the transaction me or buyer ?)
and how long should i wait to for a response from them as ive sent a few pm to them over the last few days with no responce. :(
    thanks

If your a muppet: You will get a cheque that will clear in your account (3-5 days or whatever). You will send the goods and 3-4 weeks later the cheque will bounce as its stolen/fake and the money will be gone from your account and no item.

If your a total muppet: To add insult to injury they may send 'too much' money by accident or some other bizzare reason and ask you western union the difference and keep £100 or two for your hassle. So your down your item & several £100 quid.

So on what occasions or under what safeguards is it safe to take a cheque or should I never take a cheque?

Thank goodness you sorted this out and cancelled the sale.

You are never 100% safe with any payment. You also need to make allowances for buyer protection as well.

It all depends on trust - on both sides. If you are concerned about scams then perhaps trusting an online sale to go well is not a good idea and you need to find a venue where you can meet the buyer before they pay and the buyer can make sure the item is a good one before they hand over the cash. Actually sending cash through the post is never a good idea.

For something with a large value the best way to do it is escrow or a secure payment service, but even then you need to make sure that the buyer trusts you as well as you trusting the buyer.

It's a good job that this was cancelled but eBay might not be the best place to sell a really expensive item and you need to thoroughly research any place where you are going to sell an expensive item as in general most sales are fully at your own risk. It's not a place to sell everything, particularly very valuable items. Buyers are very well protected but sellers are wise when they make sure they are selling something in a secure venue.

Protecting yourself is much harder work than just listing something for sale on eBay.

dont see why you cancelled it to be honest..

cash is great.. no worries about chargebacks etc..

all it would have took should a refund be needed was a cheque.. (maybe even postal order on special delivery?)

for them to send cash it seems they was generally interested in the item so to me seems like you have lost a decent sale
  • sounds like money laundering if they send cash.
