Curly hair problems.

Options
I have two daughters, both with very curly hair, as in corkscrew curls. Over the past 6 months, I noticed my eldests hair was becoming looser and looser. It was quite long so I had it cut back into a bob and asked the hair dresser advice on what to do. She recommended using a serum which i started to do, but it hasnt made a difference. My daughters hair now does not look curly so much as wavy and a bit of a mess really, despite what I do. What can I do to get her curls back?

They may well have just grown out :/ A friend of mine had curly hair which after being cut very short grew back fairly straight. A lot of people with thick cork screw hair find all or some of it will drop and go wavy.

I had tight corkscrew curls when I was younger, as I have grown up they have gotten looser and looser and now my hair is just wavy - I don't know why but it seems the structure of the hair changes as you get older.

My hair is super curly according to the hairdressers but it's so thick that it just ends up a mess as it pulls out my curls

I plait it after washing and drying it now every night and the curls stay in every day, esp if I use some TiGi styling lotion on it just before I plait it.

If I put serum on my hair, it does stop it frizzing but also takes the curl right out:o

  • Not sure how old your daughters are... but if they are teenage etc

Maybe try an Amla mask - really puts the curls back in, stick it on maybe once a month! If they are littleuns..maybe not!! lol :)

You can get Amla from indian grocers or ebay for £1-£2

Thanks folks. My husband thinks its because I brush her hair daily that she has lost the curl, but she does have very very thick hair like me and if it isnt brushed it gets very knotted. She is five.

Brushing can take the curl out. Layers can encourage curls, plus just brushing while wet, or before shampooing.

    Gorgeous pic btw.

When she had her hair cut, the hairdresser put layers in. I think the problem might be with school days, I wont leave her hair down for school, it gets tied up and so is brushed each morning, this is because I dont want her catching head lice and there is a lot of it about at the moment :(

I will check out that forum thanks :D

Brushing is a real enemy for curly hair. A wide toothed or afro comb verygently when its wet and has conditioner in is much better.

What I do to keep hair out of the way is plait (from wet is easier with curls) and then simply take the plaits out and replait them to catch it flyaways/frizzies each morning between washes.

I can't repeat enough that brushing curly hair dry is the enemy!

Your daughters hair is incredibly beautiful. She's a stunner. :)

Okay so I shouldnt brush her hair when dry, only when wet with conditioner. Should I stop using a serum? What about school, what would be the best way to take care of her hair but also have it looking a little less wild. She was very upset the other day because a boy in her class laughed at her hair :(
