it wouldn't sell for more than the cost of the repair would it..

    its only a corsa :o

thanks though, that has helped me a lot :)
    I assume that's sarcasm? lol.

4-year old Corsa with 40,000-miles on the clock (about average mileage) = Very sought after car given their size and ecconemy. Off the top of my head I recon it's got to be worth what, £4,000?

Can't see reapirs costing even near that, can you? If they do, you're better off without it, trust me!

not sarcasm, it just came out completely wrong :o

tbh as you can probably tell I haven't a clue what I'm doing, Im guessing that even if it needs a new engine its going to be worth it at £900ish ..

its a big expense for me beleive me..
    £608.98
    £80
    £1288.99
    £85.90
    £154.98

It's a big expense for anybody!

I'd say even at £900 it would be worth it, unless you felt like lowering yourself to the bargain bucket section of the freeads where I've got my 26-cars in 10-years from? ;)

Edit: I've just been checking ebay to see how spot on I was with the valuation of £4,000, and it would appear that you have a new (mk3) model which appeared to be when that shape was released, that being the case, add £1,000 to my initial valuation... ;)

That's not for me to decide to be honest. Do your homework and see what the value of the car is now with the mileage on it, then decide what it's worth to you which is more important.
Worst case scenario: A complete engine can be got for £900 see here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2005-VAUXHALL-CORSA-TWINPORT-1-4-BREAKING-ENGINE-Z14XEP-/260700416318?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cb2f4a93e

Fitting is about a day and a half old one out, new one in.

    Psi

    Maybe not that one though.
Hard front impact, and the engine crushed between the front and the bulkhead.
    Had two offers though.

thank you for your help though, thought everyone would laugh at me when i posted this :)

  • it does sound like a headgasket failure, in ref to a post about this a common problem and his motor factors stock the parts of 4 at a time, when i worked in a motor factor, we had deliveries of 10 rover HG sets and bolts because they are were a problem (the new multi layered steal HG and headsaver has sorted that out as farr as i'm aware), and 2-4 of everything alse so no its not because its a common problem its just stocking the shelf, any car without coolant will do damage. firstly the main thing will be getting the head off, looking at the damage, still if no visable sign the head is cracked it still must be tested by way of high pressure testing for hairline cracks and any warping about £130(the contact surface must be level not slightly out of shape due to heat or poor removal), then your water pump will be assessed as to whether its seized got damaged or was faulty and caused the water to leak out or isnt working properly, then the pistons and rings should be looket at for visable sign of damage due to over heating.

twinport heads are more expensive than the normal 1.4 MPI head. but still cheaper than a full engine! so if it is cracked and no other damage then considder the fact of a new head, head gasket SET, and possibly new valves or to cut cost instruct garage to fit old one's but this does have warrenty issues with the new head, new timing belt kit and alternator belt (fitting old one's is just stupid in my opinion theive been tensioned worn and then retentioned!! recipie for a snap! somewhere allong the lines (the kit will come with new tensioners and pully's and the belt ofcourse) and water pump and seal. having problems there after is just an assumption it may be faultless, it may turn out to have a few other underlying problems you just dont know so just cross the bridge when you get to it and not try and jump to it.

ofcourse, get prices, recon engine, second hand engine, recon head with all the valves, parts labour.

factor in oil,oil filter, plugs, coolant and antifreeze when you prices for fitting and repair.

What would cause this to happen?

Its 4 years old and done 40,000 miles.. I haven't had it serviced yet as not had it for a year but it has been serviced regularly by the last owner..

At 40k it needs a cambelt kit and if you're doing it properly, a new water pump. This could add to the expense of repairing the car.

    You're welcome!

Shortest life was an LDV Convoy I had....paid £1 for it and sold it for £50 a few days later...I don't recall any of my cars ever blowing up, although I've sent a few to the scrapyard!
