Crete Holiday

Hi everyone, I'm looking to book a summer holiday in Crete with my boyfriend in June/July.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what areas I should be looking at?

I want a nice sandy beach and some bars and restaurants but not too lively if you know what I mean!

Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Chania, north west, is a lovely area but as far as I remember a lot of the beaches are pebbly. Rethymnon is interesting but ordinary town rather han resort, although the beach is OK.
The south coast is quiet, more remote, some good beaches, not very 'night life'. Crete is large, and it's not the sort of island where you can explore everywhere.
those are the places i've been, but lots more haven't visited
