No claims bonus expiry

Options
My wife sold her car and cancelled the insurance in September 09, the policy was taken out in December 08. As most insurers allow 2 years off without losing the no claims does she have to get insurance now, before the cancellation date or before next December. We're a bit confused but obviously don't want to lose 10 years worth of no claims bonus.
Nothing to see here, move along.

You have the 2 years from the date of your proof - did you get a proof dated September 09? Then you have 2 years from the date of the proof.

If not you have 2 years from the date of the proof from December 08. (ie the date the policy was due to expire in December 08.)
  • The proof is dated 16-09-09 so she has 'til then, Thanks

If you have another car, then you can preserve both NCDs by alternating the insurer each year until you want another car.
  • Aviva will take NCB that have not been used up to 3 years. Your previous insurer may also do the same.

I believe this is no longer the case and they have changed to 2 years the same as most other companies.

A broker may be able to find you a company that will take NCD up to 3 years.

The OP posts are over a year old. So even three years old lapsed NCD would now be expired.
  • Just to confirm, Aviva Direct will now only accept NCD upto 2 years old.
