Car Insurance

I received a renewal quote from Budget for £270 but on checking on the online comparison sites I found the quotes from Budget coming in a great deal cheaper. I tried calling them to cancel to see if they offered me a better quote but it only went down about £20. My question is, is there anything to stop me cancelling this renewal and then taking out a new policy online as a new customer?

    No
you will have to do it every year, as they always try it on.
Make sure they know you are letting the policy lapse, or they will usually try to sting you with an auto-renew as well.
  • The renewal notification I got repeatedly said no need to do anything as it will renew automatically:p
Is it ok to cancel this policy by phone or do I need to put it in writing?

I would either send a letter recorded delivery (75p) or at the very least note down the full name, date and time of the person spoken to.
This allows recorded calls to be pulled, but generally if someone knows you have their name and they are accountable then IME they tend not to try it on or forget to do something.

There are companies out there who lose cancellation request, so your stuck unless you have some form of proof.

You could also go for a free proof of delivery. That is proof of posting but not delivery but in lots of legal respects that is adequate.

Depends how paranoid you are feeling :)
I tend to get a feeling for how much a trust the company and the person I've spoken to and I act accordingly but I usually have something.

Has really helped me out a few times.
  • Great, thanks. Did get a bit paranoid reading some posts regarding cancelling policies

Don't waste money on this advice. This site is for moneysavers!

Recorded delivery only actually costs 74p on top of normal first or second class post.
