iPod Touch

Following on from my thread about buying an iPod Classic or an iPod touch I have decided on the touch. I have a couple of questions...am I right in thinking that in order to rent movies you have to connect to itunes via wi-fi? Secondly, to download music do you have to connect in the same way or do you download music to your PC and then upload to the iPod?

yes you use itunes to sync music to the ipod, personally I would never use itunes store to buy the music as it is basically a rip off, I would strongly suggest either buying the CD and ripping it to the computer to itunes or buying music from somewhere else eg amazon mp3.
the how to videos technically you can download music straight to the ipod and the new songs are transfered to the computer when you next sync but you would be paying much more for the very minor convenience.

the same goes for films yes you can rent them or you can just buy them on DVD and then use a ripping software combined with a conversion software to get it in itunes format and sync it with the ipod, plenty of guides how to online.

so the only reason you need an itunes store account is for buying apps (also can be done on the device) you can even set up an itunes account without having to put in any credit card or itunes voucher by 'buying' any free app entering your details and selecting 'none' in the payment section. (also again I would only use a voucher as you often see a £25 voucher for £20, also if the accound is 'hacked' you can only loose the rest of the voucher and not your whole bank account)

if you dont have itunes already installed then even before you get your ipod you can download and install it to get familiar with it, start importing some CDs so your music is ready before you get the ipod home, also browse the app store for any apps you like the look of, (you will need to connect an ipod touch to itunes before the ipod will even work).

You don't have to connect via wi-fi; in fact its not possible to sync your iPod wirelessly (unless you jailbreak it).

Basically you run iTunes on your PC, add songs/movies to it from your existing collection or purchased from the iTunes Store, and then connect your iPod via the USB cable; it will automatically get synced up.

It is one of those strange things that in order to use one device you are forced to use another. I got an iPod Touch as a present a few years ago (from work) and it was very frustrating to see the battery came partially charged but I couldn't do anything until I plugged it into a computer and synced with iTunes.

So as above, you just load everything on the PC in iTunes and then it syncs with the iPod Touch.

If you have movies in DivX/Avi then you can use something like Videora (http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/) to convert them and add automatically to iTunes.

  • If you have DivX movies.. you can watch them without converting them if you install VLC
