I'm afraid you are making assumptions you know nothing about. You do not know where I live - or the family dynamics I speak of. You dont know why I needed to move quickly, and frankly you do not need to know for the purpose of this discussion. I dont mean to sound rude in saying that (and therefore sorry if I do) but its not relevant to the situation I am in now. Suffice it to say at the time I felt that it was something I needed to do to provide the best and safest environment for my family and I felt that I earned a good enough salary to support the short term loss I knew I was going to make. I just didnt envisage the loss going on so long.

I did get my fingers burnt - badly. And not for the first time, although for different reasons, and in different circumstances.

The chance I took was to ensure I had a suitable, comfortable home for myself and my growing family. I could not afford to rent anywhere better at the time as reasonable rents in my area were limited and there was a new development being renovated in the area and I was offered a HUGE discount on the property. I thought then that the opportunity was too good too miss - I could afford both mortgages for a period of time, and I didnt expect to still be sitting here later having to worry about tax returns, agents fees, tenants damage etc. It wasnt my long term strategy, but its here, I'm not whinging, its a fact. I am not saying it was a smart move - I am not claiming to have in anyway done the right thing. I just did what I felt was the right thing on those circumstances and on that day. The point I am making is that I hoped to be able to sell property number 1 pretty quickly. Had I held on I would have lost property number 2. Wsh I had now as its been trouble from start to finish, but thats a different post for a different day.

Some good suggestions here. At least everyone seems to agreed that the status quo is no longer acceptable. The BTL brigade have been holding a large section of society to ransom for way too long by depriving them of a chance of owning their own home.

Err, even the one about giving mortgages to anyone who wants a house?

I thought that was a bad idea?

I live in a flat around the corner and the price rose when they opened Imperial Wharf station so I can't see what your problem is.

But it is a very beautiful shed, I have impeccable taste, if not savvy business sense.

least you've admitted your failings and that you are socialist. There is nothing wrong with that but we dont live in a socialist world so we all need to adapt to the real world.

It is human nature to want to suceed, some will and some wont.

Interestingly, I still have had no advice as to what I should have done with my property now that I am not living in it, should I leave it empty?

You say he is a socialist but the following could have been written by Maggie in 1980 and was a precurser to the problems we have now i.e. selling off of council housing.
What better way for people in society feel part of that society than having a vested interest in it.Buying a "Home" for the majorty of people not only allows them to stamp their identity on it it but long term when they retire at that ever increasing age they will not have the burden of still paying rent, owning a home can give more of a sense of belonging.
