British Gas payment holiday

Just logged onto my account checking the direct debit payment and something has been added which is as follows:

"Now you can change how much you pay by Direct Debit month by month.

Take a Direct Debit payment holiday up to two months a year"

I have searched the site looking for explanation but can find none, does anyone know what this means.

It almost certainly means that you can pay your years gas bill in ten instalments rather than 12 - it almost certainly doesn't mean you can have 2/12ths of your gas for free. I suspect its designed so that if you have a particular month with a lot of other expense - e.g. Christmas you can choose to not pay that month but make up the amount at another time.

  • WestonDave you were spot on they work it out now over 10 months and not 12 so they divide £440 by 10, like you say you can choose not to pay for 2 months of the year so that the plan alters to suit. Their explanation:

    What are Flexible Payments?
Direct Debit customers now have the flexibility to:

    * Take a payment holiday
Pay nothing for up to 2 months a year and adjust your payment plan to cover the
cost of the energy you use in the remaining months.
    *

    Flex Payments
Have the flexibility to vary the amount you pay each month so that you pay
less or more some months to suit your lifestyle.
    *

Please note that if you change your payment plan, and you are not already
on paperless billing, as a part of Flexible Payments we must switch you to paperless billing.

Alternatively, if you would like to leave your plan unchanged,
    simply click on 'Cancel' below.

    Hi

I wonder if anyone could advise. I have recently been surveyed by Homesun and so far have been happy with their professionalism and helpfulness. They have said we qualify for free solar panels and have sent the legal documentation to sign. I have however been informed that in another year the government is bringing in a new scheme which is an improvement on the current system. Allegedly the new scheme will be government run and it will enable you to purchase your panels on an interest free loan which can be repaid through the FIT electricity generated. This new scheme enables you to "own" the solar panels and does not involve renting out your roof for 25 years. Help - have I been misinformed? Apologies if this has already been discussed I have read through many of the pages of discussion but have not see this new scheme mentioned. I really do not want to sign this if I find I am locked into something when there is another better scheme later on.
