  • South East, but the poor part. An unskilled labourer is £100 per day.

    Tiling/plastering etc ..... £175 per day

Project management (e.g. to oversee building of an extension) .... £200 per day

Finishing e.g. filling, painting etc ..... £135 per day.

Heating/boiler engineer .... £300 per day  but a simple "reconnect this boiler" is £200 per day.

Guess who just had an extension built? ;)

East Sussex, between Battle & Rye.

Traditionally, farming country (especially hops) but that's all gone now. And not convenient for a commute into London (Cannon Street is 2 hours door-to-door).

Typical employment in our village is farm labourer (local orchard), handyman, grass/hedge cutting, decorating, babysitting, dog-sitting etc etc. Unless, of course, you are retired .... which most in our village are. They sold up and downsized from a more affluent area.

The South East is not "paved in gold" ... there are some pockets which, comparatively speaking, are "poor".

    Are we poor here?
Hope you are feeling better DFC.

  • I'm always happy to pay a reasonable amount. £80 per day equates to £400 per week which sound reasonable. In order to account for holidays. sickness etc., I think the £80 needs to be increased to nearer £100.

There does seem to be a misconception in the country that the south east is rich. Fair enough there is probably a higher proportion of high earners and a higher than average income. However coupled with a high cost of living it doesn't always mean much. Also if there are a lot of high earners those who are average/lower than average earners are even worse off in their locality.
