Question about debit cards?

Can you tell which bank issues a debit/bank card by the first 4 numbers or the last 4 numbers of the 16 digit number on the front?

I've another question, if i have the first and last 4 digits of the 16 digit number could the bank lookup the details of a deceased relatives bank account if i have my passport and her death certificate?

Without going through a soliciter, I doubt it. Data protection and all that.

I could be wrong, I've never worked for a bank. A couple of other posters have though.

Even ignoring the Data Protection issue that Lokolo mentions, the first and last four digits is not enough to uniquely identify a card - you'd need the whole sixteen numbers. AS Lokolo has said the first four only identifies the bank, and the final one is a 'check digit' that depends on the first fifteen, so you are only left with three useful numbers. As there are going to be way more than 1000 cards issued by any one bank, then those three numbers are not going to be unique to an individual.

That's why it's safe for stores and card companies to show the last four numbers on store receipts and mailnigs, with the rest of the number starred out.

if you are the executor of the deceases estate and provide the correct documentation, then you simply write to the bank and ask for details of their accounts.

Fairly sure the DPA doesn't cover dead people. That said, I would expect a bank to provide a duty of confidence to the deceased's family.
