British Gas prepayment meter (gas) - £7 a day?

Options
To be fair it has been a cold winter and higher boiler setting = more gas used. But something just seems wrong here.

I had reckoned that, over the last 5 years, £25 slapped on the gas on Sunday (2 days ago) should last until at least Boxing Day. It *had* slipped into Emergency Credit and had dropped to about £2.50 or something before we topped it up but it came up with about £22.50ish on credit for the gas.

Today I checked and it was down to £9! That is £7 a day (or, £210 a month JUST FOR GAS).

Now, our household most expensive month was January 2010 at £165 for both Gas + electricity COMBINED (compared with 102, 106, 102, 148 for 06, 07, 08 and 09 respectively). The Decembers are not so bad, with £155 being spent for the same period last year. Electricity has been almost a totally constant £45-£55 a month for the last 5 years.

So there is something seriously wrong I think. I would think that even if the heating at highest setting has been on all day (which it hasn't been) as well as all stoves/oven stuff it would not use that much in a day. Anyone else having this same issue? (I live in Bedford by the way)

I have seen other posts recently with people saying they are using £5-£6 a day on gas.
Check you meter has no debt on it that should not be there.
Also it is very difficult to gauge your useage by money, its help if you also post the meter readings i.e. how many units per day. Also size of house and general level of insulation (none through to fully insulated to current standard).

  • that doesnt sound too out of place to me tbh. I just changed from BG to Eon, I used £85 last month in gas alone - and I was away for one week!!
